Warwick Backhouse has lived all his life in the Southern Forests. His inspiration is nature, working with native timbers, savouring the grain, colour and texture. Wherever he goes his eyes are open for interesting timber and his collection is salvaged from old buildings, farm clearing and even firewood heaps.

Warwick started wood turning when he was 11 and loved it from the start. After finishing school Warwick opened a shop at Swamp Willow Farm and worked full time with wood for many years. Having his own shop gave him the privilege of seeing first hand the pleasure that both domestic and international visitors receive from pieces created lovingly from local timbers; and knowing that his work is represented in private collections throughout the world.

Warwick really enjoys carving, particularly leaves, trees and reptiles. He values the beauty he is surrounded with in the South West corner of Western Australia, and tries to give each customer a piece of God’s bounty to take home, a reminder of all we have to cherish and be thankful for.

Warwick gets many commissions for trophies and wedding gifts and loves the challenge and opportunity to create something unique to celebrate and remember that special day. Each piece has its own story to tell.

As opportunities arise Warwick is branching out into other fields of woodwork, including furniture, joinery and sculpture. Warwick has worked with other mediums but always comes back to his passion for wood, the uniqueness of each piece and the stunning variety within our own native timbers.
