MARTIN PAVEY – ARTIST STATEMENT

Born in the pretty countryside of southern England Martin developed a deep love and respect of nature. At the age of 25yrs he married and moved north to Scotland to work in the beautiful rugged Highlands. In his spare time he worked with his fine wood craftsman Father and gained invaluable knowledge about the structure and texture of different timbers, and learned the basics of woodturning. Working from his tiny garden shed making small items to sell at local galleries and craft fairs, he was hooked for life!

After the arrival of their children the Paveys decided to leave the Scottish mist behind and head to Western Australia in search of sunshine and of course the exciting and world renowned timbers the South West had to offer . The family settled in the beautiful area of Margaret River and Martin set up his studio, selling direct to customers and supplying Galleries around Australia.

Years of experience behind the lathe has seen Martins work change dramatically from the usual small gifts to his present art work which grows and develops constantly. The inspiration for this new work comes directly form the incredible diversity of nature, from the intricately detailed beauty of shell forms, to the explosive power of the ocean waves and the breathtaking beauty of the forests around us.

HIS NEW BODY OF WORK

Every piece is first turned and carved by hand, then the surface embellishment is created. The process of this involves each mark being individually burned into the surface of the wood, then is hand polished with oil.
