Martin Jackson

Martin Charles Jackson was born in New Zealand on the 10th of February 1957 and lived in Auckland until the age of six years. He then moved to Christchurch and attended Cathedral Grammar School where he won awards for art and craft regularly. Maori carvings first inspired Martin’s interest in Woodwork. He spent every spare moment of his time doing some form of art or craft.

Martin moved to Australia at the age of thirteen and left home at eighteen to make a life of his own. In the next few years, Martin had a number of different labouring jobs.

Martin started making pine kitchenware and toys and selling them at markets for extra income. This soon became too much to handle with working at a brickyard by day and making stock into the night. Martin gave up his day job, moved into a factory unit and formed a business called Pinecraft. Martin designed a set of bunk beds that became a major seller and soon had several employees. Despite the success of the business, Martin was not happy the business had turned into an assembly line and he was no longer creating but manufacturing – he closed the business down.

Martin then got a job as a cabinetmaker for a while, followed by a job with a mining company. Working, he saved enough money to open a new business called “Turning Around”. Previous to this, Martin had done everything with wood except wood turning.

Martin bought a lathe and started teaching himself how to turn. In a very short time, he was developing his own original designs and techniques in particular a rolled edge bowl and carvings. The rolled edge bowl itself has been attempted before, but Martin developed a technique of making them quickly and taking the concept further with beautiful curled wings. His work soon became more than just bowls, but art pieces. Improving all the time, his pieces now include carving as never seen before.

Martin has an obvious talent with any sort of craft and his vision, combined with his natural ability, has gained him a reputation as a leading craftsman. His work is unique in both form and function and serves as reminder of the skill of the artist and the wonder of nature. Martin explains the feeling of being a craftsman:

” I love to stretch the limits of wood and the imagination and try things that haven’t been done before.”
” Working with my hands comes naturally and is part of me. I don’t ever imagine myself not creating ”

Martin has had many newspaper press releases about his unique work and won many awards including “Best Crafts-Person” Peel Region. Along with 200 other crafts-people in Australia, Martin was chosen to be a member of Craftmark, which is a sign of quality.
