Gary Thomas
GARY THOMAS – ARTIST STATEMENT
Born and living in Western Australia for the past 60 years. I commenced crafting sculptures out of timber at an early age, but favoured teaching as a profession rather than becoming a career woodworker.
After studying and qualifying with a degree in Chemistry and a Diploma of Education,
I pursued my teaching career but was always not far away from my workshop.
I attended many “hands on” woodworking seminars and gradually built up my skills to a level where I could design and make small, fine furniture pieces as well as sculptures.
One thought that had always interested me was the construction of Victorian Rocking Horses. About ten years ago I commenced producing Horses and since then have had them purchased by interstate and overseas buyers.
I am now semi retired, so I have more time to design and construct items. I use mainly recycled jarrah timber, which is a hardwood native to the South West of Western Australia and not found anywhere else in the world.
I have an interest in preserving the environment, so wherever possible I use sustainable materials.
