Sue Sowerby
SUE SOWERBY – ARTIST STATEMENT
From an early age nature has fascinated me. It seemed that all around clues had been left by the great cosmic artist and I felt the need to crack the code. I am still a sleuth on the trail! Not only did the forms intrigue me but also the mystery within them. As a child I can remember puzzling over my collection of delicate blue bird’s egg shells and wondering what their speckled coding meant. It was as though I was trapped in a gigantic, magical map, through which I must find my way.
Mythology and astrology captured my imagination as clues also. My sculpture often portrays mythological creatures that for me represent aspects which are still operating in us today, internal forces to be understood and reckoned with. Astrology showed me that we all contain the same universe though in different combinations. It also reveals the nature of some of the energies portrayed by starry mythological creatures.
I am mostly known for my mer-people and although they are my breadline, their poetry still close to my heart. They represent the flow and let go of life. I imagine them beneath the moon’s deep watery caverns in the underworld, playing harmonious sounds on strange instruments, maintaining the rhythm beneath the sea, the pulse of blood, heart-beat, the ebb and flow of life and tide.
