Martin Cropper

MARTIN CROPPER – ARTIST STATEMENT

Martin Lee Cropper was born in Rotherham, Yorkshire in 1958, and came to Australia with his family in 1967.He is a self-taught artist, displaying a remarkable talent from an early age, and honing his skills during his childhood and teenage years. His spare time was spent sketching, painting, creating elaborate cartoons and caricatures, and playing guitar (his other great passion).

From 1976-77 he did a course in Graphic Design at Perth Technical College. Whilst deciding not to pursue a career in that field, the skills he learnt during that period have enabled him to supplement his income over the years by doing freelance sign-writing and graphics.

Martin had his first solo exhibition in 1987 at Gallery Australia in Perth, establishing himself as an up-and-coming young artist, and paving the way for a string of successful shows in the late 80’s and early nineties. After a sell-out exhibition in 1988 Martin and his partner Deborah were able to purchase a block of land in Bridgetown, a small town in the south-west of Western Australia, realising a long-held dream of living a peaceful, self-sufficient life in the country.

In 1990 Martin and Deborah moved permanently to Bridgetown and in 1993 they embarked on the massive endeavour of building their own home. This project took 11 years to complete and during that period Martin had little time, space or spare energy to devote to his painting. Concurrent to the house-building was the formation of The Riders, a rocking little blues duo that the couple created as an outlet for the outpouring of songs that seemed to come up from the very land itself. The Riders have over the years developed into a highly polished and well-respected act with work in hotels and festivals around the state. In 2004 Martin also began working as a solo singer/songwriter and is beginning to make a name for himself with his intricate finger style and slide guitar and beautiful songs.

With the house completed Martin returned to his easel with a new vitality. Having dabbled in many different mediums over the years Martin had settled on water-colour as his favourite, and most of his works up to this point have been done in this medium. Now Martin has returned to acrylics and is enjoying the added depth and freedom that it adds to his work.

Martin expresses his love of nature in his art – his paintings most often depict the river at sunset, a sparkling early morning in the forest or a lonely stretch of beach on the rugged WA coastline, and he is always striving to convey the wonder he feels in the natural world. Much of his very early work was portraiture and he is keen to do more work in that field in the future.
