Delma White

Delma was born in Albany in Western Australia and raised in Mt Barker, a south west rural town. She has lived in many country towns and is now based in Perth. Having always had an interest in drawing, she studied for a Diploma in Art while raising a family of four.

Her pastel drawings represent life in and around the shearing sheds and farms where Delma spent a lot of her childhood. She finds the application of pastel very direct and spontaneous. The ability to apply colour directly to the surface gives freedom and expression to the works.

Delma’s childhood became the inspiration for her beautifully executed paintings of unique Western Australian wildflowers. The oil paintings on canvas are rich in colour and detail, and portray her fascination for the local bushland. As a child playing in the bush, she learned which plants were edible, how to make them into whistles and found the likes of ‘rainbows’, ‘southern cross’, ‘bacon ‘n’ eggs’ and ‘snottygobbles’. Now her obsession for these plants feeds her passion for painting.

Her subjects are always situated in the natural environment where the flower is found, so rocks, dead leaves and scruffy undergrowth play an important part in the paintings. WA wildflowers have special growing needs and there are approximately 3,000 threatened species in WA. By recreating nature’s perfection on canvas, it is Delma’s intention to promote public awareness to the fragility of our environment and to preserve our unique bushlands.

Delma has exhibited and won many awards throughout WA, enjoying successful sales both locally and overseas. Regional businesses collect her works for the rural representation. A national magazine has published an article on Delma’s artwork.
