His life-long love of water and Australia’s unique South West are clearly evident in Andrew’s dream-like and wistful landscapes.
Falling somewhere between real and surreal his paintings take us to someplace we might have once been and capture our imagination with appealing narratives and rich detail.
His first visit to the WA Art Gallery at age 13 was Andrew’s “great awakening”.
“ The moment I laid eyes on a Frederick McCubbin painting was the moment I knew that I wanted to paint ” he says.
Following his dream, Andrew initially embarked on a career in graphic design and, during an extended period overseas studied part time at London’s Sir John Cass School of Art. On his return to W.A. his career took a major shift in direction so, for many years, the demands of running a business proved a distraction from pursuing his own artistic development. However, it didn’t suppress his natural fascination with the unique light, shade and colours of the Australian landscape and his keen observations continued to fuel his original desire to paint.
Composition is a high priority in all of Andrew’s work. So much so that he will often visit a location numerous times at different times of day, not just to find the best vantage point but also to study and record the different light effects on the terrain before deciding on a final approach to the subject. The result of this commitment is no more evident than in his award winning “Still Waters Run Deep”, a study of Blackwall Reach on the Swan River.
