MEIKA – ARTIST STATEMENT

Meika jewellery creations are crafted here in Margaret River, Western Australia. Meika started supplying Boranup Gallery in 2005 to form the label Meika – custom-made jewellery. The last two years has seen her label grow from strength to strength with a continually growing customer base.

In her travels Meika tries to source both natural and manufactured beads.
Her designs often bringing together pearls, semi precious stones, glass, crystal and sterling silver. Meika is always looking to work with as many mediums as possible to create a final piece that is distinctive and unique.

Her first love is pearls – “They are available in many colours, sizes and shapes – when a women wears pearls, she wears them with pride, eager to show them off.”

“Semi precious stones are wonderful, they start off cool like the morning air and warm up with the touch of the skin. They are available smooth like a babies bottom or faceted into a master piece – the colours in just a simple piece of agate can leave you mesmerised, so many colours, shades of colour and veins of colour in one small stone.”

“Glass is a newer love, available in so many styles, colours and sizes, it is limitless in its appeal. Blown, hand crafted, all colours of the rainbow….glass beads are available all over the world. Being hand made, each bead on every strand is slightly different, as with each piece of jewellery I make.”

“Last but not least I love faceted crystals. The sun hits faceted crystal and sends prisms of light everywhere. I love to add them to my earrings, so as the wearer strolls along, she send little sparkles of light out and brightens up the world.”

Crafting a beautiful piece of jewellery gives Meika many things. It gives her time to sit down and close out thoughts of another busy day at the office, it gives her great pleasure as she finishes the last section and can view the finished piece and it gives her pride, when she see’s someone wearing her creation.
