ARTIST STATEMENT OF FRANCINE RAVEN

Since a young age and as a result of my upbringing, I have been deeply influenced by the Ocean and the Outback. From the intense colours and ruggedness of the Northwest, to the geography of our Southwest…from the turquoise of the Indian Ocean to the eerie emptiness of our vast interior. Australia, from an artist’s impression, simply offers it all! I am fascinated by the way they engage each other, conflict each other, yet somehow always create a harmonic balance.

I recognize that deep down we all, in some way, have a love and fascination with Mother Earth. She inspires me, and gives me the challenge to reflect this in the many variations of my jewellery. I really discovered my passion in my European travels whilst living in Galway, Ireland for a few years. It was during those few years when I realized what Australia truly had to offer and I knew I could reflect this in my jewellery. The constant comments on my jewellery from friends and strangers was the trigger to turning my self-taught hobby and creativity into something more.

I made the first big step by selling my jewellery creations at the local Art markets which resulted in a few small boutiques becoming interested and commenced selling my products. It was then that, although my natural artistic skills and my designs and ideas had got me this far, I decided to take my skills to the next level. I decided to venture back to my hometown, Perth, to study and further my skills in jewellery design and production at TAFE. After finishing TAFE, I ventured off and spent a year in Broome, getting my ideas together to create my own unique style. I began selling at the local markets and as a result was approached to sell to a few galleries in Broome.

I have spent the last six months working on new ideas and experimenting with different natural materials. These include Western Australian native timbers, resin, sands and pindan, silver, (castings of shells from our beautiful beaches) and Pearls.

I like to produce a very affordable range of jewellery that is unique, people are proud to wear and which reflects mine, and everybodies fascination and respect for the wonders of Australia.
