Artist Blacksmith – Woodworker
‘By hammer and hand all arts do stand!’
I’d been working with wood for ten years before I discovered the joys of ‘playing with fire!’ in 2002. Working with such elemental raw materials as wrought iron and wood evokes a passion and spirit into ones work that brings it to life!
That is why I turn to nature in much of my work for both subject matter and as a design aesthetic imbuing in forms a sense of time and movement much as the Art Nouveau artists and craftsmen of the early 1900’s did.
Wrought iron and our beautiful native woods perfectly compliment each other, the ‘Yin and Yang’ of raw materials, offsetting the weakness of one with the strength of the other.
I use hand rubbed natural oil and wax finish to bring out the beauty and figure in the wood and highlight the forge hammered patina in the iron.
I believe in the rare beauty and value of both nature and art, and my passion is working with these elemental materials in a traditional way to create things of simple beauty.
I apply this ethic to a variety of forms such as sculpture, furniture, iron gates, home interior and architectural details.
I welcome commissions.
