Susan Savage

Susan was born in Bunbury and raised in Margaret River during the 50’s -60’s as Susan Edwards. Her parents moved to Margaret River during the war, doing it hard, until Dad hand built a home in Town View Terrace. Susan lived an idyllic childhood in the quiet country town, spending most spare hours in the bush around the river, with her sisters and brothers. With Mum & Dad running a business in town, there was always plenty of time in the bush, which has had a huge influence on Sue’s love for the bush and its animals and onto her artistic creations.
Moving to Perth in the late 60’s, Susan studied art at the James Street Tech under artists such as Guy Grey Smith and another Margaret River export Tom Higgins.
Exhibiting mostly pastel and oil paintings, Susan achieved success at Harvey and Royal Shows. Moving to Coolup in the mid 80’s, with her husband, Susan gathered more animals around her which rekindled a passion for Wildlife care and conservation.
The move to pottery has opened the floodgates for creative freedom, with the old house now turned into a large studio for pottery, sculpture, glass and painting. Using bush timber and glass has added further possibilities, to her creations. Susan mixes and experiments with all her clay glazes plus uses wide ranges of clays, to achieve the results she wants, including some amazing results with Raku style firing.
Susan has achieved a great deal of satisfaction, as a wildlife carer and using her creative skills, has donated drawings and sculptures, to help raise funds for the Darling Range Wildlife Shelter. Susan represents her love of the bush and Jarrah forest animals regularly in her work, both in a serious and humorous manner.
