Karen Sewell
KAREN SEWELL – ARTIST STATEMENT
I was born in London and immigrated to Australia at the age of nine. Before we left the UK we visited Art Museums and Galleries which kick started my need to create things.
When I participated in a community art project in Bullsbrook in 1990, I was encouraged to work in the field. During this time I helped paint murals around Perth. These included works in Bullsbrook, Ballajura, East Perth and Perth Zoo. I was also working one day a week as a community Artist in Willagee.
Wanting to increase my skills, I started studying art at TAFE in 1996 until 1999, when we moved down South. I studied Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Design and Art History. During this time I also worked at the Perth Zoo doing school workshops in handmade cards and wrapping paper.
Since moving down South I have entered the Griffin Festival regularly and have won many 1st and 2nd prizes. These have been mainly in Ceramics, but have also included painting, drawing, sculpture and photography.
I am continuing to experiment with different mediums and have been producing work in polymer clay for about two years. As well I continue to paint, draw and produce ceramic works both hand built and on a wheel.
