Gerda Shelsher
GERDA SHELSHER – ARTIST STATEMENT
Gerda started to train as a potter in the late 70’s and works from a home based studio, surrounded by trees and nature. Birds and lizards are frequent visitors, plus the odd frog or two and her favourite bandicoot.
Gerda makes sculptural animals, each one an original. They are thrown on the wheel then modelled by hand to give each one its own personality. No two are ever exactly the same. She tries to show human emotions in her creatures, wonder, joy, surprise, anger, but mainly humour.
The sculptures range from tiny mice to big dragons breaking out of eggs and all the sizes in between.
Gerda uses local clays and mixes her own glazes. Over the years she has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, throughout local galleries and schools, with many of her pieces currently held in private collections throughout Australia, the UK, USA, Japan, Holland, Singapore and New Zealand.
